Marianna Goodwin Fund for Smith Middle School Students

THE PURPOSE of the Marianna Goodwin Fund is to support Smith Middle School students who
demonstrate a need for assistance with items such as band instruments, afterschool tutorials,
summer enrichment, books, sports equipment, trip funding, camps, and similar items or services
that would assist in their academic and overall development. The fund can also assist with field trip
costs for such students. Previous grant awards amounts range from $200-$1,500.

In awarding the MARIANNA GOODWIN FUND grants, funding priorities shall be given to:
1. Individual student academic needs
2. Financial need
3. Student needs in terms of participating in school projects or events.

Applications are due October 1. A scholarship selection committee will review the grants and select
recipients. The committee is composed of a school administrator, a guidance counselor and/or a
school social worker and a classroom teacher or specials teacher, the Donors or their representative
and a representative(s) of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation. The committee’s
decisions will be announced by the end of October.

  • Must be a Smith Middle School teacher, social worker or couselor
  • examples: classroom performance, EOG results, special learning needs, or other
  • examples: free and reduced lunch eligibility, subsidized housing, educational challenge or other indicators
  • examples: course, activity, study and why it would benefit this student or group. If requesting camp fees, lessons, classes, etc, provide as much detail as possible regarding location, dates, times etc.
  • Please be specific about how the funds you requested would be spent. Provide as much detail as possible here or attach a spreadsheet
