The Foundation works to spark a love of learning in all students, and we believe that excellent teachers ignite learning. Therefore, attracting, retaining and supporting excellent teachers and staff are major emphases of the Foundation. These Teachers First initiatives include:
- Endowed Teaching Chairs and Awards to honor excellent teachers and staff
- Grants for teachers pursuing National Certification and Re-Certification – Contact the Foundation office
- The Educator’s Extra Credit Card Program—offering local discounts to more than 100 area businesses for all teachers and staff
- Classroom, School and Districtwide Grants for Student Support and Enrichment and Program Improvement
- Grantwriting workshops to assist teachers and schools in securing additional, needed resources
- Support for the PSF-East Chapel Hill Rotary Teacher Supply Store
- Grants to First-Year Novice Teachers
- Professional Development
A major event that supports these projects is the annual Teachers First Breakfast. Parents and community members can treat teachers, counselors, media specialists, administrators, specials teachers, teaching assistants, clerical and other staff to a wonderful breakfast and/or a rose. The breakfast is hosted by The Chapel Hill Restaurant Group, and proceeds go to the Teachers First Fund. The breakfast kicks off Teacher Appreciation Week each spring.
