The Foundation works to spark a love of learning in all students, and we believe that excellent teachers ignite learning. Therefore, attracting, retaining and supporting excellent teachers and staff are major emphases of the Foundation. These Teachers First initiatives include:
- Endowed Teaching Chairs and Awards to honor excellent teachers and students
- Grants for Teachers and Nurses seeking National Certification or Re-certification
- The Educators’ Extra Credit Discount Program— discounts to many local area businesses for all teachers and staff
- Classroom, School and Districtwide Grants for Student Support and Enrichment and Program Improvement
- Grant Writing Workshops to assist teachers and schools in securing additional, needed resources
- Support for the PSF-East Chapel Hill Rotary Teacher Supply Store
- Grants to First-Year Novice Teachers
- Professional Development
A major event that supports these projects is the annual Teachers First Breakfast and Roses fundraiser. This event kicks off Teacher Appreciation Week and gives in two ways: a rose and a breakfast or – new in 2024! – lunch to ALL CHCCS staff and an opportunity for parents and community members to honor teachers or other staff by donating to the Teachers First fund in their honor. The breakfast or lunch is hosted by The Chapel Hill Restaurant Group.
