PUBLIC SCHOOL FOUNDATION TO HOLD 5K FOR FITNESS

Registration for Teacher and Staff Training Program Has Begun

Chapel Hill, North Carolina, February 6, 2012— The Chapel-Hill Carrboro Public School Foundation is teaming up with Fleet Feet Sports Carrboro to get teachers and school employees moving in preparation for the foundation’s first ever 5K for Fitness on April 28, 2012.

This event represents an innovative project aimed at supporting teachers’ fitness.

In partnership with Fleet Feet, the Public School Foundation will be offering the close to 2,000 employees of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School district the opportunity to register for a fitness program that will get them ready for the 5K.

“Fitness is so important but in a teacher’s busy schedule it’s hard to fit it in,” said 5K Event Chair Christine Cotton. “The training program is going to bring an opportunity to exercise twice a week to each school.”

The 6-week training program, which begins March 12, will cost $10 and includes registration for the 5K. Parents and staff interested in serving as mentors at their school can register online and attend a training Feb. 27. at the Lincoln Center.

But the event is not just for teachers.

“Community participation has been a huge asset for our organization and we want to keep that momentum,” said Kim Hoke, director of the public school foundation.

The 5K represents an effort to put more emphasis on the Race for Education, which has traditionally taken place as part of the annual Walk for Education, by making it a separate event. But this doesn’t mean the foundation will stop hosting the walks.

“We always have the walk and we will always have it,” Cotton said. “That’s not going away.”

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School foundation is an independent, nonprofit organization that creates learning opportunities for students and teachers in the district. The Foundation has distributed over $4,000,000 to our schools since 1984.
