PNC FOUNDATION AWARDS $10000 GRANT TO PUBLIC SCHOOL FOUNDATION

Funds will be used to support pre-K classes across Chapel Hill-Carrboro School District

The PNC Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation to fund a project that will target the 18 classes in the prekindergarten programs of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School District.

The project, titled “Growing and Learning Every Day in Pre-K,” includes a social and emotional curriculum and a hands-on learning component focused on math, literacy and science.

Funds will be used to purchase Pre-K Second Step, a curriculum that helps students to focus their attention, refrain from problem behaviors and consider the perspectives of other students. Assessment measures and professional development are also incorporated.

The award will also be used to purchase iPads to deliver hands-on lessons that will increase student engagement in math, science and literacy emerging skills. iPads will be available in most pre-K classrooms in the district.

The goal of the project is to provide pre-K students with access to tools that will motivate them to listen, pay attention, follow directions, control behavior and make connections between the world around them and what they learn in school.

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation is an independent, non-profit organization that is dedicated to mobilizing community support for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. For more information, visit www.publicschoolfoundation.org
